Physician and software engineer. I live with New Daily Persistent Headache, I write this site, and I build the tools I needed and could not find.
NDPH is rare enough that most clinicians will see very few cases, and unfamiliar enough that it is often mistaken for something else first. What I found, looking for information of my own, was a gap: the peer-reviewed literature was there, and the patient-facing material was there, but very little sat in between — accurate about the evidence, and written for the person actually living it. This site is my attempt at that middle ground.
Having the condition does not make me an authority on it. It does mean I know which questions go unanswered, because they were mine first.
I came to medicine from software. I have been building things for fourteen years and did not stop when clinical training started — my medical thesis was on prompt engineering and whether large language models can be brought to bear on reading peripheral blood smears, and the apps I have shipped are in daily use. Migraine & Headache Companion is that same instinct pointed at my own condition: when the tool you need does not exist, the useful response is to build it carefully and give it away.
Everything on this site is drawn from published literature and cited as such, and none of it replaces a clinician who knows your history. Where the evidence is thin, the site says so rather than rounding it up — that mattered to me as a patient before it mattered to me as a physician.
Away from all of this I play guitar with more enthusiasm than skill, hike when the head allows, and take engines apart on the assumption that they will go back together. I live with my wife and our two children, who are the reason any of this gets finished at a reasonable hour.
